Wood
Spring · East · Jupiter · Green
Wood is the element of dawn and awakening — the first stirring of life after winter's long silence. In the Wuxing cycle, Wood represents the raw, upward thrust of growth[1]: the bamboo shoot splitting stone, the vine reclaiming a ruined wall, the forest that refuses to be contained. Those touched by Wood carry within them an irrepressible vitality, a deep-rooted faith that the world can be shaped, healed, and made new.
Governed by Jupiter and aligned with the East — where the sun is reborn each morning[2] — Wood energy is expansive, generous, and the phase that feeds Fire in the generating cycle[3]. Wood people are the planners and the dreamers, the ones who see a barren field and envision a garden. They possess a natural compassion that draws others to them, and a flexibility that allows them to bend without breaking when storms arise. Like the great trees of ancient forests, they provide shelter and stability to those in their orbit, yet their roots run deep into unseen places, drawing wisdom from sources others cannot reach.
Yet Wood unchecked becomes wild growth without direction — the invasive vine that chokes what it embraces, the idealism that curdles into rigid moralism. When blocked or frustrated, Wood energy turns to anger, the liver rising in traditional Chinese medicine[1]. The challenge for those governed by Wood is to channel their relentless growth with intention: to be the cultivated garden rather than the untamed wilderness, to know when to prune as well as when to flourish.
