The Great Race

How did twelve animals become part of the Chinese zodiac? It all started with a race across a mighty river...

Chapter 1

The Big Announcement

Long, long ago in ancient China, the Jade Emperor had a BIG problem. He needed a way to measure time so everyone would know which year it was. After thinking and thinking, he came up with the most amazing idea ever — a RACE!

He sent a message to all the animals in the land: "Come to the riverbank tomorrow morning! The first twelve animals to cross the great river will each get a year named after them — FOREVER!"

Every animal in China got excited. A year with THEIR name on it? This was the biggest prize in history! But there was a catch — the river was wide, deep, and very tricky to cross.

Chapter 2

The Rat’s Clever Plan

The little Rat was worried. He was the smallest animal in the race! How could tiny little Rat swim across such a big, scary river?

But Rat was VERY clever. He had an idea. He went to his friend the Ox and said, "Dear Ox, you are so strong and such a wonderful swimmer! Could I ride on your back? I’ll sing you songs to keep you going!"

The kind Ox agreed. "Hop on, little friend! We’ll cross together."

Before the sun came up, while all the other animals were still sleeping, Rat and Ox were already walking to the river. Rat was SO sneaky — he knew that starting early was the secret!

Chapter 3

The Ox’s Strong Heart

The mighty Ox dove into the cold river with Rat sitting on top of his head. The water was freezing and the current was strong, but Ox didn’t care. He was the strongest swimmer of all!

Step by step, stroke by stroke, Ox pushed through the rushing water. He was SO close to the other side — he was going to win!

But just as Ox reached the riverbank, sneaky little Rat JUMPED off his head and landed on the shore first!

"First place! First place!" squeaked Rat, doing a happy dance.

Poor Ox was surprised, but he wasn’t angry. He was just happy to finish second. That’s because Ox had the biggest, kindest heart of all the animals.

Chapter 4

The Tiger’s Mighty Swim

SPLASH! The powerful Tiger dove into the river with a mighty leap! Tiger was strong and brave, but the river current kept pushing him downstream.

"I will NOT give up!" roared Tiger, paddling with all his might. His huge paws slapped the water as he fought the waves. Water splashed everywhere!

Finally, with one last burst of energy, Tiger pulled himself onto the shore, dripping wet and out of breath.

"Third place!" announced the Jade Emperor.

Tiger shook the water from his beautiful fur and let out a proud ROAR that echoed across the mountains. He had earned his spot!

Chapter 5

The Rabbit’s Lucky Leap

Little Rabbit hopped to the edge of the river and gulped. She was a terrible swimmer! But Rabbit was smart AND lucky.

She spotted some stepping stones poking out of the water. Hop! Hop! Hop! She jumped from stone to stone, but suddenly — oh no! — there were no more stones! Rabbit was stuck in the middle of the river!

Just then, a floating log drifted by. Rabbit jumped on it and held on tight! The current carried the log right to the shore.

"Fourth place!" said the Jade Emperor with a smile.

Rabbit did a little happy hop. Sometimes being brave AND lucky is the best combination!

Chapter 6

The Dragon’s Surprise

Everyone thought the Dragon would win the race easily. After all, Dragon could FLY! He could just soar over the river in two seconds!

But Dragon had stopped to help some farmers along the way. Their village was so dry that their crops were dying! Kind Dragon made it rain so their fields would grow.

Then, as he flew over the river, he saw poor little Rabbit stuck on a log. Dragon blew a great big puff of wind that pushed the log to shore, saving Rabbit!

By the time Dragon finally crossed the finish line, he was only in fifth place. But he didn’t mind at all. Helping others was more important than winning!

"Why didn’t you fly straight here?" asked the Jade Emperor.

"Because being kind is more powerful than being fast," said Dragon wisely.

Chapter 7

The Snake’s Secret

The wise Snake had a secret plan. While Horse was galloping toward the finish line, Snake had been quietly hiding in Horse’s hoof the whole time!

Just as Horse was about to cross the line, Snake slithered out from behind Horse’s hoof. "Ssssurprise!" hissed Snake.

Horse was SO startled that he jumped back with a loud "NEIGH!" And Snake slithered across the finish line first!

"Sixth place goes to Snake!" announced the Jade Emperor.

Snake smiled quietly. Sometimes the wisest move is to be patient and wait for the perfect moment.

Chapter 8

The Horse’s Wild Gallop

Horse was the fastest runner of all the animals! He galloped toward the river at full speed, his mane flying in the wind.

When he reached the water, Horse didn’t even slow down. SPLASH! He charged right in, kicking up huge waves with his powerful legs!

Horse swam across faster than almost everyone. He was SO sure he was going to be in the top five! But then Snake surprised him right at the finish line, and Horse jumped back in shock!

"Seventh place!" said the Jade Emperor.

Horse shook his mane and smiled. "At least I had the most EXCITING race!" he said, and everyone had to agree!

Chapter 9

The Goat, Monkey, and Rooster’s Team

The Goat, the Monkey, and the Rooster decided to work as a TEAM! Rooster found a raft by the riverbank. Monkey and Goat helped clear the weeds and push it into the water.

Together, they paddled across the river. Monkey used a long stick, Goat kept everyone calm, and Rooster crowed directions: "LEFT! RIGHT! STRAIGHT AHEAD!"

They worked together so perfectly that they all made it across! The Jade Emperor was so impressed by their teamwork that he gave Goat eighth place, Monkey ninth, and Rooster tenth.

"You three showed that friends who work together can do ANYTHING!" said the Emperor proudly.

Chapter 10

The Dog’s Splashy Fun

Dog was actually one of the BEST swimmers! He should have finished way earlier. So what happened?

Well, Dog loved water SO much that when he jumped in the river, he started playing! He chased the waves, splashed around, and had the time of his life!

"This is the best day EVER!" barked Dog happily, doing doggy-paddles in circles.

By the time Dog remembered it was a RACE, most of the other animals had already crossed! He quickly swam to shore and arrived in eleventh place.

"Better late than never!" Dog wagged his tail, still dripping and grinning. He was just happy he got to play in the water!

Chapter 11

The Pig’s Nap

Last but not least came the Pig! Why was Pig so late? Well, during the race, Pig got hungry (as pigs do!). He stopped to eat a yummy meal. Then, with a full belly, he felt SO sleepy that he took a little nap!

When Pig woke up, he yawned, stretched, and said, "Oh! The race! I almost forgot!"

Pig waddled to the river, swam slowly across, and arrived just in time to claim the TWELFTH and final spot!

"Just made it!" said Pig with a big, happy grin.

The Jade Emperor laughed. "Welcome, Pig! You complete the circle of twelve!"

Chapter 12

The Twelve Are Chosen!

The Jade Emperor stood before the twelve animals and smiled the biggest smile the heavens had ever seen.

"You have ALL shown something special today," he announced. "Rat showed cleverness. Ox showed strength. Tiger showed courage. Rabbit showed luck. Dragon showed kindness. Snake showed wisdom. Horse showed spirit. Goat, Monkey, and Rooster showed teamwork. Dog showed joy. And Pig showed that it’s never too late!"

"From this day forward, each of you will have a YEAR named after you. Your special qualities will bless every person born in your year. The cycle will repeat every twelve years, forever and ever!"

And that is how the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac were chosen. The end... or really, the beginning!
